Swallowing problems (also called dyphagia), are sometimes severe and life threatening, and may occur as a symptom of a variety of medical conditions, including stroke, head and neck cancer, Parkinson’s, ALS, and others. Dysphagia is also a common problem for people with a diagnosis of dementia, particularly in the later stages of their disease process.When swallowing difficulty results in poor nutrition and weight loss or when food and liquid is getting into the lungs (aspiration), and pneumonia occurs, a physician will often recommend a stomach feeding tube.
